What is free, and at what expense? In the modern world, we expect everything to be free, but someone has to make said thing. When 2023 rolled around this word kept popping into my mind, and I wondered how it would be possible to give something away and not go bankrupt myself.
After 5 years my first feature film "The Horror" is now back with me and I am doing just as the post says, giving it away for free. The original goal of this first film was just to get seen, and that has yet to happen. I realized that there are filmmakers out there just waiting to make their first film and maybe this will be an inspiration, to see what is possible when you get like-minded artists together and just create.
Over the next 6 months, I will be doing this process three times. The first being on 2.14.23 with "Autumn's End: The Horror". The film will be available for free on my website and youtube. I will be blogging about the reality of "selling" or "distributing" your film and what that truly means to the microbudget filmmaker.* I will be pulling back the veil of secrecy and showing the actual process and what it involves. If you believe in your film, then put it out there. State your goal and intention and get to work.
My goal in 2023 is to inspire future artists. As an educator, I have realized that there is a lot of competition between artists and we need to help each other out. What would happen if we shared each other's films and talked with each other without fear of competing? What would be possible with the community? I had one distributor tell me it feels as if I am making films for other filmmakers and that's exactly what I am doing. I am offering up my knowledge to others so they can create and share their work, and sometimes that is for Free.
As artists, we must ask ourselves what the true goal is of our work. Is it to become famous, or rich? Is it to be known in certain circles, or celebrated at a festival? I have realized my goal is to empower the next wave of artists to create what they truly want to see, and by offering up my low-budget trilogy of films, I hope you can see that things are possible when you lean into the restraints.
I re-released the director's cut of the film on our youtube, as well as on BronsonCreative.us. The film is now available for FREE (you read that right) on both platforms. What helps is if you sign up for our substack or subscribe to the Bronson creative Youtube. This will help within the algorithm and put this in others' newsfeeds and suggestions. All of which will offer the film to those that could use the inspiration. You can talk about making films or you can make films, let's get to work!
