I’m Back!! Its been a while since we have chatted but I couldn’t be more excited to be sitting here writing this to you today. It’s the first week of Bronson Creative as my full time work. When I found out that my previous school was closing it’s doors I knew it was for me to open the next one, and here we are. Day 1.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Great questions. It means that everything I have been talking about the past 7 years is about to go into effect. Bronson Creatives original mantra was “Quality and Budget are not mutually exclusive”. The budgets are not why we go to the cinema, we go for stories. Over the years society has forced into artists minds that you have to make money, and lot’s of it, to feel successful. In my opinion it couldn’t be further from the truth. These past 5 years of teaching have taught me that the future is very bright for our art form, and no one cares about the technology, because they were born with it.
A little story time…
When I was coming through college we were making the transition from Standard Definition (SD) to High Definition (HD). It was like jumping into the screen. Unlike anything you’d ever been able to see outside the cinema. This leap led to a wide sweeping advertising campaign that was fueled by the advent of Facebook and Youtube. I didn’t pick my first camera, it picked me. A Canon Xh-A1, I regret ever selling that thing. Mini-DV and HD. A winning combination to make the transition.
This camera would shoot my first feature film that I made in college with my friends. We had two XH-A1’s and we went for it. 0:22:43 was it’s title. I was into number movies for some reason in college. This camera allowed us the freedom to create whatever we wanted to create. Was the film good? It did makes it way into a festival, and I learned so much real world knowledge that was impossible prior to that. From there on I would chase all of the gear and watch all of the tutorials to find the perfect fit. The one thing I never found was someone talking about what it takes to actually make the film. What exactly does it take to complete a film and put it into the world. This is what I want to teach. This is where I want to start our journey together. I want to bridge the gap between the tech and the story. Your camera is like a paintbrush, they all do the same thing but you feel the difference. Make the feeling about story, not advertisements.
As of today, Bronson Creative is what its always strived to be. A place to inspire others to take a chance and show a pathway forward. Being an artist is about taking a point of view. What do you want to show us?
UP NEXT….
Bronson Creative is a journey not a destination but the next big goal is to Collaborat/Invest/Buy a Movie Theatre to screen and show Micro-budget filmmakers work. So if you know anyone I’d love to chat and see whats possible. But first up is the website and courses:
All of the educational content will be available HERE I will be putting together self led and group courses to help you with your first short of feature film. I am also filming a course on how to make a feature film for $7k, just like we did for “Seize The Carp”. I got to do a brief test of this with my high school students and they were all very excited about the possibility of bringing a feature to life. This combined with my Micro-Budget Producing course will be the perfect combo to get you across the finish line. You can start by downloading my free filmmaker starter kit by clicking HERE. You will get a NDA template, shot list and to do list templates, along with other creative brainstorming maps and development forms to structure your next film. Time to open the gates.
Youtube has lots in pre-production and production. I will be moving at the end of the month and getting a fantastic opportunity to build a small tv studio in the 1 car garage. I’ll be filming all of the behind the scenes with hopes of getting a public access station going for film education and media literacy. Yeah, I said Public Access, it’s still a thing. All of this will be free to the community and my way of sharing some of the lessons from my classroom experience. I will also be looking for freelance editors and social media managers over the coming months. If you, or someone you know is in this space then make sure to keep an eye out on instagram.
My next show is inspired by all the things I wasn’t taught in school. In my series “Un/taught” (Working Title) we will discuss media and financial literacy by deep diving into everyday things like doing taxes, and tagging your car. In this series we will dig deeper into the history of these complex ideas and how we got to where we are. It is my hopes that in looking at the past we can empower the future generations to critically think about the complexity of human life. Youtube is open for many ideas, and I hope the community comments about topics they’d like to see. I’ve been doing this for a while and ready to share what it’s actually like.
Substack will be more of these types of posts along with the deep dives on complex systems. I will also be covering more about media literacy and education. I also plan to be doing these more often, no more 3 month gaps. Un/taught will probably start as a post on here that expands visually on youtube.
Instagram is for BTS and Reels. Linked-in is for more educational and guest artist possibilities. Tiktok will be for short and highlights from longform youtube. If you haven’t subscribed to my youtube, I would be forever grateful as I am trying to monetize the channel which takes 1k subscribers. This helps a little boost and gets me into the ecosystem of other creators so viewers can see a different way of creating. You can subscribe by clicking HERE
Thank you one million times over for all the support all these years. I think this is great for new artists to see that each day is an opportunity for change and growth. Today is day 1, what will you do with it?
